Bryan Schafer is a 23-year veteran
of law enforcement. He has been with the Minneapolis
Police Department for the past 16 years, currently serving
as Commander of the Department's newly centralized Juvenile
Unit. Previous to that, he was the Sergeant in-charge
of the 5th Precinct Directed Patrol Team, responsible
for innovative ideas to deal with emerging crime patterns
in high crime areas. Schafer's Directed Patrol Team
received the 2003 Unit of the Year Award by the Minneapolis
Police Department for their accomplishments.
Schafer started his law enforcement career in 1983 and
completed his Associate Degree at Alexandria Vocational
Technical Institute in 1984. Bryan relocated to the
State of Wyoming where he attended the Wyoming Law Enforcement
Academy, graduating as Honor Graduate of his class.
Following the academy, he worked as a Police Officer
in Rawlins, Wyoming and then as a Deputy Sheriff in
Cheyenne, Wyoming. Schafer returned to Minnesota in
1991 and joined the Minneapolis Police Department. He
completed the Minneapolis Police Recruit Academy and
again graduated with Honors. During his tenure with
Minneapolis he has served in Patrol, Traffic, DARE,
CODEFOR, Community Response, and Investigations. In
May 2005, Bryan completed his Bachelor's Degree at Metropolitan
State University, finishing in the Top 10 percent of
his class and received the Outstanding Student Award.
His senior thesis, Public Perception and Police Attitude
(2003) has been accepted for publication. Bryan has
also been licensed as a Technical College Instructor
through both the MN and WI Board of Technical Colleges.
Bryan formerly coordinated the Drug Evaluation and Classification
Program and impaired driving related training for the
Minneapolis Police Department. He is one of the premiere
instructors in the United States. As a Drug Recognition
Instructor, he has trained over 1000 law enforcement
officers from 150 departments in 10 states. Schafer
was 1 of 8 national instructors selected to instruct
the 1st International Drug Recognition School in Vancouver,
B.C., Canada, in 1995. Bryan was also invited to Washington
D.C. to work on establishing and administering instructional
programs for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
His contributions were rewarded in 2000 when he received
the National Award for Outstanding Education by the
International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)
and Citizens Against Drug Impaired Driving (CANDID).
He continues to instruct Drug Recognition and Impaired
Driving Training for the Minneapolis Police Department
and the State of Minnesota.
Other career contributions include Drug Recognition
Research at John Hopkins University, Drug Recognition
curriculum review/updates for IACP, Drug Recognition
training recommendations to the Minnesota Legislature,
and numerous prosecutor and judicial training seminars
in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Bryan also assisted in organizing
the 1999, 5th Annual, Drugs, Alcohol, and Impaired Driving
Conference.
Due to the overwhelming demand for Drug Recognition
education in the public and private sectors, Bryan founded
Corporate Drug and Alcohol Specialists Incorporated,
specializing in educating business on the signs and
symptoms of drug influence. To date, Bryan and his partners
have presented educational programs to hundreds of personnel
in a multitude of fields, including education, transportation,
communication, counseling, medical, liquor, hospitality,
law enforcement, corrections, probation, insurance,
and casinos. Today, they continue to address America's
drug problem through Recognizing the Drug Impaired,
"Last Call" Beverage Server Education, and
Hospitality Crime Prevention programs. Bryan is committed
to providing the customer with the latest information,
provided by the highest caliber of drug recognition
instructors in the country.
